Frequently Asked Questions
Push a key into the ignition barrel 20 times a day for ten years and the metal inside eventually gives. The barrel holds a set of small spring loaded wafers that read the cut of your key, and they aren’t built to last forever. Normal wear is the most common cause. A theft attempt where someone has forced a screwdriver in can take a barrel from stiff to completely seized within a few weeks.
Try the key in the door lock. If it works there but not in the ignition, the barrel is almost certainly the problem rather than the key. No. Getting stranded is the least of it. Some barrel failures let the key come out while the engine is still running. Others, where the wafers have worn far enough, mean the car starts without the correct key at all. Neither is something you want at 70mph.
It depends what’s wrong with it. A stiff or sticking barrel can often be stripped back and cleaned. A barrel with broken wafers inside, or one that has been forced, needs replacing. We’ll give you a straight answer before any work starts. If it does need replacing, we set the new barrel up to your existing key wherever we can, so you won’t usually need new keys.

Yes. Don’t try to dig the broken half out yourself, as that can damage the barrel. We’ll remove the broken piece, check the barrel and cut you a new key on the spot.
